Information about travel to and from Gotland and the new coronavirus and Covid-19.

The ferry to Gotland is an important and critical function for the entire community, and Destination Gotland has the task of maintaining the ferry service to provide Gotland with goods and transportation. At the same time, we all have a responsibility to minimize the risk of infection. The capacity for medical care to Gotland is very limited and geared to the island’s residents.

Destination Gotland follows the recommendations of the health authority and we reserve the right to change the schedule at short notice.

The Gotland destination follows the recommendations of the Health Authority and has limited ferry traffic, both in terms of the number of trips and the number of passengers on each departure. The health department recommends that everyone avoid unnecessary driving.

The health department’s 7 tips to protect you and others:

Stay home if you are sick or experience mild symptoms such as a sore throat, cough or cold. Stay home for at least 48 hours to you recover.

  1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  2. Use hand sanitizer when it is not possible to wash hands.
  3. Avoid close contact with sick people.
  4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  5. Cough and sneeze into your bent elbow or into a paper tissue.
  6. Remember not to visit the elderly if you are ill or have any symptoms of illness.

Before departure

Can I travel to and to Gotland even if I am considering the new coronavirus covid-19?

Yes, we have daily departures between Gotland and the mainland. We have introduced new routines and measures to reduce the risk of infection, and we are actively working to ensure that our passengers maintain adequate distances, etc. We follow the recommendations of the health authorities and to our passengers to do the same. All travelers must certify at check-in that they have no Covid-19 related symptoms.

How do travelers confirm at check-in that they do not have Covid-19 related symptoms?

All travelers checking in digitally must confirm this when picking up their boarding pass. Passengers checking in at the terminal will be asked a question by our staff. A medical certificate or similar is not required, we ask all travelers to take responsibility and answer truthfully.

What are you doing to reduce the number of travelers on board the ferries?

The number of bookable seats on board is limited to ensure a greater distance between passengers. Less than half the passenger capacity will be available on all departures to minimize the risk of infection to staff and passengers.
We continue our basic service, i.e. two daily departures to and to Nynäshamn and one daily departure to and to Oskarshamn on most days, with regular departure and arrival times.

How do you ensure traffic in the long term?

By limiting ourselves to basic traffic, we are securing our most important resource in the long term, our employees, who are absolutely essential for maintaining Gotland’s supply in the coming crisis period.

Can the ferries be quarantined?

Our trips are short, about three and a half hours, so quarantine is not necessary. Suspected coronary infections are isolated until arrival, and any coronary tests are performed by health authorities.

Is food still served on board?

Yes, food is still served on board, but we have removed some tables to minimize restaurant congestion. We also have information in our stores and markings to the floor to help passengers keep a safe distance from each other.

Are the travelers checked at the port?

We follow the recommendations of the authorities on control, and currently there is no control of travelers in the port.

Can you transport sick people?

In early May, we received permission from the authorities to provide specialized medical transport on to car deck during the crossings. Permission was granted to approval on how we can evacuate the car deck and handle emergency situations. It is valid in the context of the current Corona pandemic and applies only to specially scheduled medical transports.

Therefore, this condition applies only to extraordinary crossings specifically designated for medical transportation. On normal crossings, we do not allow passengers to remain to car deck during the crossing. This is in accordance with the applicable regulations.

We have done this to support the regional authorities, should this be necessary.

What do you do to prevent travelers from becoming infected or spreading the infection on board?

We follow the health department’s advice. We also have information on board, and all public restrooms are equipped with hand sanitizers (this also applies to our staff rooms). We have also changed our food handling and serving procedures in the dining room.

In the interest of both passenger and staff safety, we recommend that all travelers check in via cell phone to receive their boarding pass. When travelers with vehicles enter their license plate number when booking, the contact request is reduced.

Travelers boarding through the terminal should use their cell phones to check in, then the contact requirement at ticket counters and check-in desks will be reduced.
We recommend all passengers to stay away from their fellow passengers on board and during check-in.

What cleaning measures have been taken on board?

In addition to the usual cleaning measures, we have updated the cleaning routines in consultation with health experts. We clean all surfaces that people come into contact with, such as handrails, card terminals and handles, more frequently and more carefully.

Can I choose where I sit on board?

We try to place everyone traveling in the same group next to each other, and each group separately from other groups within the same area. Several lounges are open during the trips, and it is possible to change seats or purchase other seating options at the onboard information desk to departure.

Is it possible for me to stay in the car during the trip?

For safety reasons, we cannot allow you as a passenger to stay in your car during the trip.

What do you do if someone on board gets sick?

As always, there are personnel with good medical knowledge on board. We have procedures and equipment ready in case someone gets sick during the trip.

Can you use a mouth guard or mask on board?

Yes, you can.

Could the virus spread through the ventilation system on board?

According to the health department, the virus is a droplet infection that spreads primarily when a patient coughs or sneezes. The virus can also be transmitted by direct contact.

Can I book a trip or is it likely to be cancelled?

We monitor the spread of infection and its effects. We cannot guarantee that there will be no changes to the scheduled departures.

Can I change a booking?
