Stena Line relocates ferry terminals in Gothenburg for more sustainable ferry service

Stena Line and the Port of Gothenburg officially agreed on June 9 to move the ferry terminals for German and Danish traffic. The transfer of handling from the Gothenburg urban area to a common terminal in the Arendal port area will create a solid basis for sustainable transport solutions in both ferry traffic and the port on the Swedish west coast.

A future plan for sustainable transport solutions

According to the joint schedule between the parties, the goal is to have the new ferry terminal operational by 2028. The contract includes the construction of a terminal and a lease agreement for the corresponding land and buildings. The agreement between Stena Line and the Port of Gothenburg covers a period of 25 years.

Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line, said, “We have an ambitious roadmap to become a leading sustainable shipping company. This agreement offers us security and development prospects as both cargo and passenger traffic will continue to grow.” Arendal offers growth opportunities, he said, while at the same time the move creates development opportunities for the city of Gothenburg.

A new location for improved connectivity

Since the 1960s, Stena ferries to Kiel and Frederikshavn (Denmark) have been handled centrally in Gothenburg at the Majnabbe and Masthuggskajen facilities. With the move to the new location, the berths will be relocated approximately 8 kilometers to the west, bringing them closer to the harbor entrance.

Elvir Dzanic, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, said: “With this agreement, we are a big step closer to relocating Stena Line’s ferry operations.” Consolidating the terminals at one cargo hub in the outer port is the logical step to exploit synergies and further develop the entire port, he said. Dzanic will leave the post of port chief to join Wallenius SOL.

A look into the future of ferry transport

The move of the ferry terminals in Gothenburg marks an important step towards sustainable transport solutions. The close cooperation between Stena Line and the Port of Gothenburg will create the basis for a more efficient and environmentally friendly ferry connection between Germany and Denmark and Sweden.
