As a district of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, Travemünde is known for its promenade that accompanies the Trave river to its confluence with the Baltic Sea. The old lighthouse from 1539, which today houses a maritime museum, is visible from afar. The New Beacon, which is located on the 36th floor of the Maritim high-rise, is more modern. In the old town there are historical buildings such as the St. Lorenz Church or the Old Bailiwick from 1551.
