Durres looks back on an eventful past. The city was founded by the Greeks in the 7th century, followed by the Romans and Byzantines. Today it is still an economic centre and attracts many visitors with its shopping streets, sandy beaches and bays. Worth seeing are the Freedom Square with the Great Mosque and the Royal Villa, which offers a beautiful view over the city. The forum, thermal baths and amphitheatre bear witness to Durres’ Roman past. The ancient city wall leads to the Venetian Tower. The café there is a great place to relax after a day of culture.
