St. Petersburg was built about 300 years ago on former swamp land. Today, the city is the world’s northernmost city with over a million inhabitants. Its magnificent city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You see here about 2300 castles, palaces and magnificent buildings. The historic district is surrounded by the Peter and Paul Fortress. You should definitely take a look at St. Isaac’s Cathedral, built at the beginning of the 18th century, not far from the extensive Hermitage. The harbour area of St. Petersburg is huge. One of the harbour basins has a 2.1 km long quay wall for the cruise ships. It has a direct connection to public transport.
