Portoferraio was once completely surrounded by a fortification wall. Access to the city was only possible through two gates. Today the fortresses can Strong Falcone and Forte Stella can be visited. Also the Tower della Linguella and Castle del Volterraio are impressive contemporary witnesses.
The Villa of the Mills served as a residence for Napoleon during his exile. In keeping with his status, he had all the rooms fitted out with furniture and floors imported from France. Today the National Museum is located in the premises.
