Travel guide Algeria

Holiday in Algeria

Algeria is the second largest country in Africa. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Byzantines have left their traces here. Along the coast you will find lively cities with historic old towns, markets and imposing architecture. The rest of the country is dominated by the mighty Atlas Mountains and the endless expanse of the Sahara.

TOP excursion destinations in Algeria

Algeria’s capital Algiers invites you to stroll and shop extensively. The old town Kasbah consists of a labyrinth of beautiful houses and winding streets. Downtown is home to posh shops and fancy restaurants. Also worth seeing in Algiers are the Great Mosque, the Church of Notre Dame d’Afrique and the Monument to the Martyrs. The botanical garden is located in the immediate vicinity.

High above the coastal town of Oran, the fort of Santa Cruz towers mightily. It dates back to the 16th century and is as much a landmark of the city as the old quarter Sidi El Houari. The beautiful beaches also promise pleasant days by the sea.

In Timgad the Romans left behind a whole city. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Once it was surrounded by a wall, columns adorned the streets. Today visitors can see the forum, the theatre and the imposing Trajan’s Arch. A museum shows findings and mosaics. The ancient cities of Tipasa and Djémila are no less fascinating.

The Tassili n’Ajjer is a mountain range in the Sahara, famous for its prehistoric rock paintings. They are believed to be up to 10,000 years old. Visitors discover giraffes, elephants, hippos and crocodiles. The sites at Jabbaren, Tamrit and Sefar show scenes of daily life at a time when the Sahara was still green and criss-crossed by rivers. Absolutely fascinating!

Those who want to experience the Sahara in its most beautiful form should not miss a trip to the Great Ergs. “Erg” translates to “sea of sand.” How appropriate, since the sand dunes of the Western Great Ergs extend over a length of 600 kilometres and a width of 250 kilometres.

Entry requirements

For German nationals, entry to Algeria is possible with a passport and children’s passport. An identity card is not sufficient. Upon entry, identity documents must still be valid for at least six months. In addition, a visa is required, which must be applied for in good time. The Federal Foreign Office provides information on further rules, in particular on travel to the southern parts of the country.

Alternative travel options

Travelling by car, bus and train from Germany is tedious. Moreover, they often turn out to be difficult because of the political situation and necessary border crossings. By plane you travel much faster and less stressful, the duration for the route Frankfurt – Algiers is 2.5 hours.
