Holiday onto the Azores

Far out in the Atlantic Ocean, 1,369 kilometres from the Portuguese mainland, lie the Azores. The nine islands of the archipelago promise unforgettable nature experiences. Away from mass tourism, unique volcanic landscapes, paradisiacal colours and a diverse flora and fauna await you. Here the chances are particularly high to be able to observe whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. Stylish architecture and hospitality typical of the country ensure varied holidays.

TOP excursion destinations onto the Azores

The capital of the Azores is Ponta Delgada. The old town invites you to discover its beautiful buildings, decorated facades and narrow streets. The stylish pavement mosaics are also beautiful. The entire old town is now a listed building. The lively squares, the many churches and the fort are also very popular with visitors.

The Terra Nostra Park on São Miguel is considered a paradisiacal place. In the 18th century a rich American had his summer residence built here and the garden laid out. Some of the trees are over a hundred years old, and visitors will enjoy the world’s largest collection of camellias. In addition to hidden paths, ponds and avenues, the park offers a real speciality: you can bathe in the thermal pool. But be careful! The iron contained in the water colors the skin deep brown.

On the island of Terceira, there is the mighty Castelo de Sao Baptista with its five kilometres of defence walls. Here the treasures of the Portuguese conquerors were reloaded and the water and food supplies were replenished. The extensive fortress is well preserved to this day, the governor’s palace, chapel and church can be visited.

With a height of 2,351 metres, Pico Alto is considered Portugal’s highest mountain. Often the majestic volcano is shrouded in clouds. If not, it opens a fantastic wide view over the grandiose island world. Hikers appreciate the climb for its unique natural scenery. Who likes it more comfortably reaches the summit with the car.

About 2,000 years ago, the Algar do Carvao was formed during a volcanic eruption. The so-called “coal cave” is pitch black and about 100 meters deep. Stairs lead far down, at the bottom is a lake. A look upwards offers a fascinating play of colours due to the incident light.

The hot springs of Furnas undoubtedly belong to the highlights of the Azores. Everywhere it bubbles and steams, sulfur smell is in the air. 22 springs promise relief for rheumatic complaints and for diseases of the respiratory tract and skin.

Those who look down from the view point Pico da Cruz to the twin lakes of the Lagoa das Sete Cidades will understand why there are numerous legends about this place. Because one lake is blue (Lago Azul), the other green (Lago Verde). According to legend, the eye colors and tears of an unhappy pair of lovers are responsible for the coloring….
