Travel guide Channel Islands

Holiday in Channel Islands

The five Channel Islands are located in the English Channel between England and France. Besides Jersey and Guernsey, there are also the smaller islands of Sark, Herm and Alderney. Even though the Channel Islands are directly under the English Crown, they are not part of the United Kingdom. Travellers can look forward to charming harbour towns, fantastic beaches, mighty castles and lush blossoms.

TOP excursion destinations in Channel Islands

The largest Channel Island
Jersey
knows how to inspire with its lively capital Saint Helier. The fortress island of Elizabeth Castle is only accessible on foot at low tide, while Mont Orgueil Castle rises mightily above Gorey harbour. If you are interested in prehistoric history, La Hougue Bie is the place to be. The island offers its guests pure bathing pleasure with extensive sandy beaches, blue water and numerous hours of sunshine. This is a great place for hiking and cycling. The Gulf Stream gives the island an incomparable floral splendour, which can be admired on a visit to Samarès Manor or Judith Quérée Gardens.

The image of the Channel Island
Guernsey
is characterized by steep cliffs, hidden bays and beautiful beaches. A well-developed cycling and trail network delights active holidaymakers. English and French influences are evident in the charming island capital of Saint Peter Port. Elizabeth College, Castle Cornet and Victoria Tower are particularly fascinating here. Along the coast, twelve watchtowers still remind us of the time of the Napoleonic wars, and the Little Chapel is definitely worth a visit. The smallest church in the world is decorated with pebbles, shells and porcelain particles. What a beautiful sight!

In the Channel Islands
Alderney
, Herm and Sark are tranquil places. There aren’t even any cars on Herm and Sark. Here picturesque sandy beaches alternate with dunes and steep cliffs. Always in view: the blue of the Atlantic.

Entry requirements

To enter the United Kingdom, German citizens need an identity card, a passport or a child’s passport. All documents must be valid until departure.

Alternative travel options

Both the island of Jersey and the island of Guernsey have an airport and are therefore easily accessible by air.
