TOP excursion destinations in Japan
In Japan’s capital Tokyo, traditional Buddhist culture and ultra-modern architecture go hand in hand. Visitors experience historic Tokyo at the Imperial Palace and Sensō-ji Temple, the city’s oldest and most beautiful. Modern Tokyo presents itself with Metropolitan Government Building, Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge. The 634-metre Tokyo Skytree offers a spectacular view of the metropolis.
The Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine is considered to be the most photographed motif in Japan. Over 1,000 scarlet Shinto gates form the entrance, toone behind the other. Gate by gate, the path leads over more than a kilometre to the historic main building, whose history dates back to the year 711.
The Kiyomizudera Temple is considered a landmark of the city of Kyoto and fascinates with its grandiose location and its wooden beam construction. The shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is especially popular in autumn when the surrounding forests turn yellow, gold and bright red. The Golden Pavilion Kinkaku-Ji is also one of the sights of Kyoto.
“Hanami” – the cherry blossom festival – has heralded the arrival of spring for centuries, transforming the country into a sea of pink blossoms. The Japanese especially like to enjoy the time between the end of March and the beginning of April with a picnic.
The sacred Mount Fuji is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and striking volcanoes in the world. With an altitude of 3,776 meters, it is the highest mountain in the country. Even from Tokyo, 100 kilometers away, its symmetry and snowy peak are recognizable.
Onsen baths are hot springs. They have become known worldwide because of the monkey families that enjoy a warm bath here during the cold winter months. But people also like to use the spa for wellness and relaxing massages.
The Peace Museum takes an unsparing look at to destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused by the atomic bomb. Panoramic displays give an idea of their enormous dimensions. Among the most significant exhibits are a clock that was left standing at the time of detonation and a letter from the bomb maker. In it, he asks the president never to use the bomb.
Entry requirements
EU citizens need a (child) passport to enter Japan. All travel documents must be valid for the entire duration of the stay. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days.
Alternative travel options
With Tokyo, Osaka, Naha and Fukuoka, Japan has several international airports, which ensure a comfortable and fast journey. The journey with the Trans-Siberian Railway takes considerably longer. It takes 144 hours from Moscow to Vladivostok, from where there is a connection to the Fähre.
