TOP excursion destinations in Sicily
Sicily’s capital Palermo invites with its imposing cathedral, Norman palace and baroque facades to an extensive city stroll. Through the old town to the beach, where numerous cafés are waiting for you with a real Italian cappuccino.
Taormina is famous for its medieval old town, its ancient theatre, its churches and palaces. The pedestrian zone Corso Umberto connects the two city gates, halfway the Piazza IX Aprile offers a square open to the sea with a magnificent view over to Mount Etna.
Catania stands for urban lifestyle and recreation. The sandy beach Playa di Catania is after all a whole 30 kilometres long. In the city, Via Etnea, the Cathedral, the Roman Theatre, Ursino Castle and Piazza del Duomo with its famous Elephant Fountain are all waiting to be discovered.
The old town of Syracuse is picturesquely situated on a peninsula and delights with baroque facades, a castle, an imposing cathedral and a freshwater spring. In the Archaeological Park visitors will find the Greek Theatre, with a diameter of 138 metres it could seat up to 15,000 spectators.
If you are a fan of baroque architecture, Noto is the place to be. An earthquake in 1693 destroyed almost the entire city. The reconstruction in baroque style was characterized by wide streets, squares, staircases, palaces and churches. In 2002 Noto became part of the world cultural heritage.
Picturesquely situated on a hill, the town of Agrigento is famous for its ancient ruins and the Valley of the Temples. Here you can visit the temple of Hera and Heracles. The Concordia temple has been completely preserved – except for the roof. Pure fascination!
Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at 3,323 metres. In 2017, he said, his last outbreak occurred. By cable car and bus you can reach an altitude of 2,900 metres. The rest of the way to the summit can only be done on foot – accompanied by a mountain guide.
A fascinating natural phenomenon is offered by the Scala dei Turchi – the “Staircase of the Turks”. The monumental rock glows in brilliant white, its formation reminiscent of the steps of a staircase. Underneath the blue sea – wonderful!
On hot summer days, the Cavagrande del Cassibile nature reserve offers welcome cooling. Along the ten-kilometre-long gorge, turquoise pools and numerous waterfalls invite you to take a refreshing dip.
