Cancel or change ferry due to coronavirus?

The coronavirus (COVID-19) also brings ferry traffic worldwide to a standstill or is subject to severe restrictions. Many shipping companies have completely discontinued their ferry services or currently operate exclusively freight traffic to maintain the supply of the individual countries and regions. However, tourist travel is now no longer completely prohibited. Many shipping companies have already reopened their doors in this respect and allow travel under hygienic conditions.

Cancel or rebook your trip?

Here many will now ask the question, can I cancel or rebook my booking? Unfortunately, this question cannot be answered so simply. Because this depends from various factors. For example, the entry requirements of the various countries, the tariff booked with your shipping company, the terms and conditions of the shipping company, whether there is a travel warning for the destination country and other factors. You may also have a travel cancellation insurance that covers the cancellation costs in such a case.

We have looked around at some shipping companies, checked the rebooking options and created the following overview.

Scandlines

All Scandlines ferries operate to their normal schedule. This applies to the following routes:

Stena Line

Stena Line passenger services are permanently suspended on to following routes:

All other routes are currently operated to valid timetable.


DFDS

DFDS operates all ferry services to normal timetable. So no route is paused. This applies on to following routes:

DFDS offers various arrangements to its routes for rebooking or cancelling trips that have already been booked. There is the possibility to change your booking, to cancel or to get a voucher. You can find more information directly here at DFDS or to our page about DFDS Corona.


Finnlines

Finnlines is operating as scheduled again to all routes. But for connections to Finland to there is a restriction that travelers from Germany must self-quarantine for 14 days to entering the country since Aug. 24, 2020. This regulation is valid for the time being until November 10, 2020. This concerns the following routes:

The routes to Sweden are currently operated without restrictions. This concerns the following routes:

With Finnlines you can change your booking twice, depending on to fare you booked. Tickets in the special fare cannot be canceled, but only rebooked. Standard fare tickets, on the other hand, may be cancelled in accordance with Finnlines’ General Conditions of Carriage. More information


TT-Line

TT-Line also operates on schedule to all routes. This concerns the routes:

The 14-day quarantine requirement for travelers from Germany to Lithuania was lifted on October 12, 2020.

People entering the country from Sweden must go into quarantine for 14 days. Truck and bus drivers are exempt from this requirement.


Tallink Silja Line

Tallink Silja has again expanded traffic to Tallinn – Helsinki route. Currently, two ferries operate daily again, one additionally on weekends. Also the ferry Turku – Stockholm has already resumed service and is running to regular schedule.

The following ferry services to Baltic Sea have been to until further notice. This concerns the following routes:


Color Line

Color Line has suspended passenger services from Kiel to Oslo from Friday 28.08.2020 until further to. With this measure, the two cruise ferries will only be used for short Baltic Sea cruises from Oslo, but without shore leave. New bookings for the ferry Kiel-Oslo are possible again immediately from trips from 19.12.2020.

The Hirtshals – Kristiansand and Hirtshals – Larvik ferry services will continue to operate as normal and will continue to from freight and passenger traffic.

The Strömstad – Sandefjord ferry service will be out of service up to and including 02 November 2021.


Fjord Line

Fjord Line has discontinued regular travel services until the end of the year due to the ongoing entry restrictions in Norway. There is only one ferry to route Hirtshals – Kristiansand to ensure the transport of goods and labor. Stavanger is now only served on Wednesdays and Sundays with a new schedule.

Fjord Line offers until 30.11.2020 a free change of booked voyages to a later date until 31.12.2021 at the latest. For new bookings with a travel period until 21.03.2021, it is also offered to rebook these trips to another travel period free of charge up to 72 hours before departure.


Corsica Ferries

Corsica Ferries operates to all routes to normal timetable. Different measures apply to ferries to Corsica, Sardinia, Italy and ferries to the Balearic Islands.

  • Italy: requires a negative Covid19 test no more than 72 hours old upon entry from a risk area. If this test is not available, it must be made up within 48 hours.
  • Corsica: In the ports, the temperature of all passengers is measured.
  • Sardinia: Entrants must fill out an entry declaration before entering Italian territory.
  • Balearic Islands: Body temperature is checked and a health questionnaire is filled out.

P&O Ferries

All P&O Ferries ferries, Channel ferries and ferries to Ireland, operate to the current timetable. This concerns the following routes:
