Travel guide Elba
Holiday in Elba
The island of Elba offers holidaymakers white beaches, crystal clear waters, picturesque villages, rugged cliffs and a Mediterranean lifestyle. If you are interested in history, you can follow the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte on Elba, who lived here in exile for ten months from 1814 to 1815.
TOP excursion destinations in Elba
The island’s capital Portoferraio enchants its visitors as soon as they enter the harbour. Ochre-coloured houses, a picturesque old town and mighty fortifications determine the townscape.
Once Portoferraio was completely surrounded by a fortification wall. Access to the city was only possible through two gates. Today the Forte Falcone and Forte Stella fortresses can be visited. The Torre della Linguella and the Castello del Volterraio are also imposing witnesses of the times.
The Villa dei Mulini served as Napoleon’s residence during his exile. In keeping with his status, he had all the rooms furnished and floored with furniture imported from France. Today the National Museum is located in the premises.
On a tour of the island, tranquil coastal towns invite you to linger. Rio Marina, Porto Azzurro and Marciana Marina have one thing in common: winding alleys, small squares and picturesque harbours.
The mountain village of Marciana has much to offer its visitors: an old town with picturesque squares and stairways, a sanctuary, a fortress, a cable car and real “stone monsters”.
Culture lovers will discover traces of antiquity in the ruins of three Roman villas. They were all built in picturesque locations and once bore witness to the wealth of their builders.
With an altitude of 1,019 metres, Monte Capanne is the highest point on the island. Whether by hiking or by cable car: on a clear day, the summit offers a magnificent view as far as Italy and Corsica.
Entry requirements
German citizens enter Italy with a valid passport, identity card and children’s passport. A visa is not required.
